Development and Peace…Sow Much Love

Dorena Hall, JPIC Core Committee

Week of Action Oct 12-19, 2014

D&P, you will remember, is an important part of our Canadian church. For the past 45 years we have been supporting and empowering the poor in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

During the 2014 Lent campaign, D&P focused on the issue of hunger and food production. Since more than one billion people still suffer from hunger around the world, D&P is making this the focus of its 2014 education campaign.

One of the most important ways we can stop hunger is to support small family farmers. These farmers are being threatened by multinational seed companies who are gradually replacing traditional seeds by industrial varieties, and are unjustly given patents on different seeds.

During this campaign we are asking Canadians to sign a petition to the Canadian Government demanding that Canada adopt international aid policies that support small scale farmers, especially women, and recognize their vital role in the fight against hunger and poverty. We seek also to ensure that Canadian policies and programs are developed in consultation with small family farmers, protecting the rights of small family farmers in the Global South to preserve, use and freely exchange seeds. In solidarity,
