2020 Marks the 400th Anniversary of the Birth of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys

Submitted by Associate Marjorie Allison-Ross

Happy New Year! We are now in the actual anniversary year of the birth of our foundress, St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. In Visitation Province, we’ve been celebrating this special occasion since April 17, 2019 so we already have many beautiful memories. I’ve been blessed to walk in Marguerite Bourgeoys’s footsteps in her native Troyes, France in September 2019 during the 400th Anniversary Pilgrimage to Troyes and in her adopted home of Ville-Marie (Montreal) in July 2016 during the 35th Anniversary of Associate Relationship Pilgrimage to Montreal.

Linden Associates Gathered for Annual Christmas Celebration

Submitted by Associate Shirley Gormley

On Monday, December 16, we gathered at Shirley’s home for our annual Christmas get-together. Sr. Anne T. Gillis led us in a reflective prayer that highlighted our preparation for Christmas which, we agreed, is not a date on the calendar but a matter of the heart. We had planned a simple, potluck meal that turned out to be delicious. We delighted in the closeness we share as a group. We missed our Associates Ken and Anne MacDonald, and the many others who are not with us because of illness or death. Anne is now in Beach Grove Home. Ken is her faithful husband who has cared for her lovingly and consistently.

May 2020 bring many blessings to us all.

Christmas Pageant at Parkland Cape Breton

Submitted by the Associates of Cape Breton

On Wednesday December 11, 2019 under the direction of New Victoria Associate Angela, the Associates of the local groups performed a re-enactment of the Christmas Pageant for the Sisters and residents living at Parkland Cape Breton. The theatre was filled to capacity as everyone took their places. Sr. Elaine Hawrylak, CND led us in some carolling in preparation for the narration of the pageant done by New Victoria Associate Lorette. St. Theresa Associate, Dianne, presented a very spiritual account of the “Story of the Three Trees” that helped us see that even though our plans for life may change, God’s love can brighten any darkness that comes our way and that when we are down God is thinking of something better to give us. In fine Congregation de Notre-Dame fashion, we were treated to a banquet of rich foods provided by the Centre and the Associates. As the guests left to go to their rooms, one resident expressed thanks and mentioned that she had no spirit when she entered the room but was leaving with an abundance of Christmas spirit. Associate co-Coordinator, Theresa Ann MacNeil thanked everyone and wished all a very Merry Christmas.

Woodstock Associates Christmas Gathering

Woodstock Associates and the Fredericton Congregation de Notre-Dame Sisters Eleanor McCloskey and Karen Kelly gathered at the home of Helen Ross in Woodstock for prayer, social gathering and a Potluck Lunch on December 8. Each December, we collect bathroom and kitchen paper products and cleaning supplies for the Hayward House Recovery Centre which is a recovery oriented community resource for adults with mental illness in the Woodstock area. We also remembered many with Christmas cards.

Grannie’s Treasures

Submitted by Associate Theresa MacNeil

At the Annual Fall Fair for St. Theresa's CWL in Sydney NS, on November 21st, 2019: Dianne and Doreen make a wonderful team at the Fall Fair's "Grannie's Treasures" table which they volunteer to work at each year. There is always a wonderful display of treasures waiting for that special person to come along and get a glimpse of something that catches their eye.

Appreciative Luncheon for Fortress of Louisbourg Volunteers

Submitted by Associate Theresa MacNeil

On Sunday December 15, 2019, the Fortress of Louisbourg volunteers gathered in the Bigot Theatre for an Appreciation Luncheon. During the summer months Congregation de Notre-Dame Sisters and Associates volunteer in the De La Perelle Exhibit. This exhibit features "The Sisters of Louisbourg" about the lives and work of the Sisters of The Congregation de Notre-Dame who ran the only formal school in Louisbourg, NS in the 18th Century. The luncheon was wonderful and this time together provided an opportunity for "Visitation."

Visit to CND Caraquet

Submitted by Miramichi Associate Fran Connell

Caraquet is an Acadian village on the Bay of Chaleur in northern New Brunswick where Congregation de Notre-Dame Sisters lived, loved, laboured and prayed for 125 years from 1874-1999. I felt their presence there yesterday, December 15, when I attended a Christmas Concert in the parish church where the Little Stars of Marguerite Bourgeoys sang like angels and were a featured part of the program. There in front of the church is the former convent which burned many years ago, the statue of Our Lady and the Convent Park. The memory of Marguerite and her Sisters is very much alive. IT is worth a visit to Caraquet to go and see for yourselves.
