ジャンヌ・ル・ベールは、17世紀にモントリオールの上流階級の家庭に生まれました。本来ならば、快適な暮らしを送り、釣り合いの取れた男性と結婚して、フランスの植民地ヴィルマリー（現在のモントリオール、カナダ）の裕福な良家の遺産相続人となるはずでした。しかし彼女は、良家の娘に用意された人生を歩む代わりに、神の招きを識るためにじっくりと時間をつかいました。ご聖体のうちに現存するイエスへの愛から、当時の修道召命とは異なる生き方を、勇気を出して受け入れたのです。彼女の知恵と取次ぎの力に心から信頼を寄せる人々から、彼女は「ヴィル・マリーの天使」と呼ばれいましたが、同時に優れた芸術的才能を教会への奉仕に役立てた芸術家でもありました。ジャンヌの信仰の証しは何世紀も生き続け、今も世界中の修道会や信徒にインスピレーションを与えています。「ご聖体の人」であったジャンヌが亡くなった時、人々は彼女を「聖女」と呼びましたが、現在でもオールド・モントリオールのノートルダム・ド・ボンスクール教会に眠るジャンヌを訪れ、その墓前で祈る人々がいます。ジャンヌの生涯の一面を知って、どうぞジャンヌとの霊的な繋がりを育てて行ってください。勇気をもって、寛大に生涯をキリストに捧げた女性。その生涯の出来事をとおして、また特有な召命のかたちで、人々に知られるようになったジャンヌ。「見えない方をお守りする人」であったジャンヌが、2008年ケベック市で開かれた国際聖体大会で広く紹介されたのは、本当に素晴らしいことでした。
Were you aware that this young Montreal woman was born into a social class that would normally have prepared her for a life of comfort and for marriage? That she was destined to become a wealthy and notable heiress in New France? That she did not let herself be guided by social status, instead taking the time to discern God’s call to her? Did you know that, because of her love for Jesus present in the Eucharist, she courageously accepted a life that was unlike the religious vocations of her time? That when this “Person of the Eucharist” died she was recognized for her holiness and that it is still possible for us today to gather before her tomb located in Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in Old Montreal?

With regard to faith, our society, this modern-day Ville-Marie, has once again become a “missionary territory.” Because Christians today are seen as counter-cultural, it takes courage and an ever-growing love of God to witness to the faith.
